Deputy Head of Estates
Full time permanent £45,366 to £48,130
Safe. Sustainable. Strategic. Is it you?
As Deputy Head of Estates at Wigan & Leigh College, you'll build our foundation for the future, playing a leading role in how our campuses work. You’ll oversee planned maintenance delivery and capital projects across multiple sites, managing budgets, negotiating contracts, and working with suppliers. You’ll make sure our buildings meet every compliance requirement. And working alongside our Head of Estates, you’ll oversee our systems and collaborate across departments to deliver the details that makes a difference.
This isn't maintenance work happening in the background. It's strategic decision-making that shapes the physical spaces where our technical excellence education happens.
What you’ll do
- Champion the delivery of planned maintenance and projects across multiple campuses, ensuring nothing slips through and everything happens when it should.
- Oversee compliance and statutory responsibilities alongside our Head of Estates, from fire safety and Legionella to asbestos control.
- Manage budgets, contracts, and supplier relationships with our Head of Estates. You'll make sure every pound delivers value.
What you bring
- A relevant qualification in Facilities Management, Building Surveying, or Built Environment (or equivalent experience that proves you know this field).
- NEBOSH or IOSH certification or equivalent knowledge. You understand statutory compliance, health and safety, and sustainability practice. You don't just meet regulations, you think strategically about them.
- Experience managing multi-site operations. You've worked across multiple locations, and you understand that complexity.
- A mechanical and electrical background is useful. But it's not essential if you bring strong operational leadership.
- Technical confidence. You can talk to engineers and contractors. You understand building systems. You ask the right questions. Problem-solving approach. When something breaks or a process isn't working, you fix it.
Why join us?
Technical excellence isn’t something we say, it’s who we are. And better buildings mean better education. Our students and staff spend their days in these spaces, and when our buildings work well, we can achieve at the highest level.
At Wigan & Leigh College, we don't see estates as an overhead. We see it as foundation to everything we do. You'll work with a team thinking strategically about our physical environment, measuring what matters, and making continuous improvement part of every day.
You'll have real influence over capital decisions and lead a function that's central to how our college runs. You'll see the outcomes of your work when our campuses run smoothly, we stay compliant and deliver sustainability.
We're committed to equality, diversity, and sustainability in every aspect of our work. Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do, so you’ll need an enhanced DBS check as part of this job.
Apply now and help us fix the problems that shape the future.
