With over 25 years of dedicated service at Wigan & Leigh College, Martin Gilmore is a Curriculum Lead with extensive experience in recruitment. He’s dedicated to finding candidates who are not only qualified but also genuinely passionate about teaching. Whether he’s engaging with seasoned educators with years of classroom experience or individuals taking their first steps into a teaching career, Martin believes the core principles of standing out in an interview remain the same.

Marina Islam-Banford
A Level Quality Lead and Sociology teacher at Wigan & Leigh College, Marina Islam-Banford reflects on her move to Further Education (FE) following 17 years teaching in secondary and private schools. Marina highlights the rewarding opportunities in the FE sector: “I love teaching, and the learners here keep me young and motivated. The freedom to explore open discussions and connect topics to real-world experiences is something I couldn’t fully achieve in high school. In FE, we’re not just preparing students for exams, we’re shaping their futures.”

Nic Gaskell
Nic is a passionate educator whose journey into teaching began at an early age and continues to thrive within the vibrant halls of higher education (HE) at Wigan & Leigh College. From his first tentative steps as an Associate Lecturer to becoming a course leader for a Bachelor of Engineering programme, Nic’s story is one of dedication, creativity and a love for inspiring students.

Amy Mason
Amy provides advice and guidance to school leavers as they embark on their next steps, whether that’s continuing education or entering the workforce. She also arranges for school groups to visit the college and experience lessons first-hand before applying, organises mock interviews for Year 11 students, and attends careers events and parents evenings.

Carol Shirling
Carol is one of the friendly and welcoming faces that every visitor and student sees upon arrival at Wigan & Leigh College. “I initially joined the college on a temporary contract to provide support to the front desk,” she said. Her commitment and enthusiasm quickly earned her a permanent position after just eight weeks.
